This Is How It Feels to Heal: A Shamanic Journey Through Cancer, Life Challenges, and Recovery

This Is How It Feels to Heal

Illness, Addiction, Survival, and the Work of Coming Back Alive

Healing demands courage, not perfection.

This Is How It Feels to Heal is Steve R. Patterson’s face-to-face account of illness, addiction recovery, liver failure, cancer, transplant, spiritual inquiry, survival, and the long process of rebuilding a life after collapse.

About the Book

This Is How It Feels to Heal was not written as a polished recovery product. It was written from the inside of survival.

The book carries the record of a period when life had been stripped down to the essentials: illness, addiction recovery, spiritual searching, medical uncertainty, identity collapse, and the question of what remains when the old self no longer works.

It is part memoir, part meditation, and part testimony. It does not offer a simple formula. It does not turn healing into branding language. It follows the lived process of being broken open and having to decide what kind of person could still be built from what survived.

The Three Layers of the Story

The book moves through three intertwined layers of experience:

  • The Body — surviving liver cancer, liver failure, transplant, physical decline, medical dependence, and the strange experience of living inside a body that nearly failed.
  • The Mind — facing addiction, relapse, recovery, confusion, fear, shame, identity loss, and the psychological wreckage left behind by years of survival behavior.
  • The Spirit — searching for meaning through spiritual practice, shamanic inquiry, altered states, narrative integration, and moments when pain became something more than pain.

The result is not a “feel-good” recovery story. It is not a clinical case study. It is a lived account of survival written by someone who walked through fire and came back with the scars intact.

What Readers Will Find Inside

  • The visceral truth of facing death and trying to come back to life.
  • Reflections on addiction, recovery, illness, transplant, identity, and spiritual survival.
  • Moments of despair, confusion, surrender, renewal, and unexpected beauty.
  • A record of healing that does not separate body, mind, and spirit.
  • The roots of the Healing Pathways work that came later.

This Is How It Feels to Heal is not just a personal chronicle. It is also a mirror. Readers may recognize the ways trauma, illness, addiction, and loss can test a person’s will to keep living. They may also recognize how those same forces can break open hidden strength.

The book does not claim that healing erases scars. It shows healing as the reweaving of life around them.

Where Healing Pathways Began

This book became part of the foundation for Steve’s later work, including The Healing Pathways Companion, The Healing Pathways Facilitator’s Guide, and the ASAM Level 1 Facilitator’s Guide to Outpatient Groups.

Those later books provide structure, exercises, and frameworks. This book shows where the work was forged.

Before Healing Pathways became a body of work, it began here: in illness, recovery, surrender, spiritual searching, and the attempt to make meaning out of experiences that did not fit neatly into one category.

How This Book Connects to Wind and Raven

This Is How It Feels to Heal also belongs to the older Wind and Raven archive.

Wind and Raven began during the years when Steve was sick, recovering, searching, and trying to understand what had happened to his life. Some of that early writing and spiritual inquiry helped shape the language, questions, and direction of this book.

Today, Wind and Raven is the public home for the reflective and personal side of Healing Pathways, including videos, future live conversations, and the archive of illness, survival, spiritual inquiry, and transformation.
