What these books are, what they are not, and why they exist.
This post is part of the StevePatterson.online archive because it connects several parts of my current work: Healing Pathways, Valkyrie Counseling Group, recovery education, group facilitation, habit change, and the ongoing question of how to preserve human presence in a field increasingly shaped by automation, metrics, and digital systems.
The video itself is hosted on the Valkyrie Counseling Group YouTube channel. Valkyrie is the professional and publishing home for my facilitator-facing work, including The Healing Pathways Facilitator’s Guide and the ASAM Level 1 Facilitator’s Guide to Outpatient Groups.
StevePatterson.online is where the larger map comes together. That is why this video belongs here too.

What the Video Covers
In this video, I introduce the books I wrote and published in 2025 and explain what they are — and what they are not.
These books are not counseling programs, coaching packages, or plug-and-play training systems. They are tools. They were designed for people who already have experience, responsibility, or context in the work of recovery, habit change, group facilitation, and personal transformation.
The goal is not to replace human judgment. The goal is to support it.
The Healing Pathways Books
The Healing Pathways books include:
- The Healing Pathways Companion
- The Healing Pathways Facilitator’s Guide
Together, these books form a 12-week, non-clinical, human-centered framework focused on identity, meaning, narrative, reflection, and change.
The Companion is written for individual reflection. It gives readers a way to work through story, identity, survival, meaning, and transformation on paper.
The Facilitator’s Guide is written for people who are holding space for others: group leaders, recovery coaches, counselors, peer-support workers, and facilitators who want a structured but flexible way to use the Healing Pathways material in relational settings.
These books are intentionally paper-based. That matters. Healing Pathways is not built around automation, apps, dashboards, or digital tracking. It is built around presence, reflection, writing, conversation, and human attention.
The ASAM Level 1 Facilitator’s Guide
The ASAM Level 1 Facilitator’s Guide to Outpatient Groups is a structured, clinical-adjacent handbook for counselors-in-training and above.
It assumes baseline competency. It is not a substitute for licensure, supervision, treatment planning, diagnosis, or professional judgment. It is a practical 12-week group structure for people who already understand the ethical and professional responsibilities of recovery-oriented group work.
The guide is grounded in ethics, trauma-informed care, habit formation, motivational interviewing principles, group process, and the ASAM change process. It was created to help facilitators lead groups that are structured without becoming mechanical, and human without becoming chaotic.
Why These Books Matter Now
These books were created during a period when recovery, counseling, education, and healthcare are being reshaped by automation, documentation systems, metrics, and digital platforms.
Some of that change is useful. Some of it is inevitable. But something important can get lost when the human encounter becomes secondary to the system around it.
The Healing Pathways and ASAM books are my response to that tension.
They are not anti-technology. They are not nostalgic. They are an attempt to preserve something that still matters: human presence, story, responsibility, reflection, and the ability to sit with real change without reducing it to a checklist.
Where This Work Lives
Valkyrie Counseling Group is the professional and publishing home for the facilitator-facing side of this work. That includes the ASAM guide, facilitator education, group process material, and professional recovery-oriented resources.
Wind and Raven is the public home for the reflective and personal side of Healing Pathways, including videos, future conversations, and the older archive of illness, survival, spiritual inquiry, and transformation.
StevePatterson.online is the central hub. It connects the books, podcasts, essays, media projects, digital legacy, recovery frameworks, and public work.

Important Note
This video and post are educational and informational. They are not counseling, coaching, clinical treatment, diagnosis, crisis support, supervision, or a substitute for professional care.
The books discussed here are tools. They should be used within the reader’s appropriate role, training, experience, supervision, and professional responsibilities.
